Trump Injustice Department wants to investigate Renee Good’s widow rather than the ICE goon who killed Good

This would be unbelievable in any other presidential administration, Republican or Democrat: threatening to conduct a criminal investigation into the grieving widow of a person killed by a federal agent under highly questionable circumstances, rather than investigating whether that killing was justified.

But Trump has destroyed so many norms and precedents that have previously guided the federal government to do the right thing for the citizens of the United States, it isn’t surprising that when it comes to the tragic killing of Renee Good, which plenty of evidence shows was unnecessary, the Trump administration would be doing the absolute wrong thing.

Here’s excerpts from a New York Times story, “Six Prosecutors Quit Over Push to Investigate ICE Shooting Victim’s Widow.”

Six federal prosecutors in Minnesota resigned on Tuesday over the Justice Department’s push to investigate the widow of a woman killed by an ICE agent and the department’s reluctance to investigate the shooter, according to people with knowledge of their decision.

Joseph H. Thompson, who was second in command at the U.S. attorney’s office and oversaw a sprawling fraud investigation that has roiled Minnesota’s political landscape, was among those who quit on Tuesday, according to three people with knowledge of the decision.

Mr. Thompson’s resignation came after senior Justice Department officials pressed for a criminal investigation into the actions of the widow of Renee Nicole Good, the Minneapolis woman killed by an ICE agent on Wednesday.

Mr. Thompson, 47, a career prosecutor, objected to that approach, as well as to the Justice Department’s refusal to include state officials in investigating whether the shooting itself was lawful, the people familiar with his decision said.

…Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general, said in a statement that “there is currently no basis for a criminal civil rights investigation” into the ICE agent.

Instead, the Justice Department launched an investigation to examine ties between Ms. Good and her wife, Becca, and several groups that have been monitoring and protesting the conduct of immigration agents in recent weeks. Shortly after Wednesday’s fatal shooting, Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, referred to Ms. Good as a “domestic terrorist.”

Utterly disgusting.

There’s zero evidence that Good or her spouse were some sort of crazed left-wing terrorists out to hurt, kill, or maim federal ICE agents. Quite the contrary. The reports I’ve seen say that Good and her spouse were simply protesting the inhumane behavior of ICE agents as they terrorized peaceful, law-abiding, hard-working members of the immigrant community in Minneapolis.

From what I’ve seen, the only terrorists running around Minneapolis are the armed, masked, violent ICE agents who attack citizens of the United States for exercising their constitutional right to protest government overreach that threatens our rights and freedoms.

Hopefully the local authorities in Minneapolis will move ahead with their own investigation of Good’s killing by Jonathan Ross, who certainly seems to be guilty of manslaughter, if not murder. The Trump Injustice Department has refused to let Minnesota officials take part in a joint investigation of the shooting, which also is unheard of, since in the past federal and state officials have worked together in investigations of killings by law enforcement personnel.

Making matters worse (Trump always does), Politico is reporting that the Trump administration will be cutting federal funding to sanctuary cities and states as of February 1.  Oregon is one of those states, and Portland is one of those cities.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he will suspend federal funding to sanctuary cities and states beginning Feb. 1 as his administration’s immigration crackdown continues.

“Starting February 1, we are not making any payments to sanctuary cities or states having sanctuary cities because they do everything possible to protect criminals at the expense of American citizens,” Trump said during his address at the Detroit Economic Club.

…Trump’s announcement comes just days after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot an American citizen in Minneapolis. The fallout has been a whirlwind, with state officials demanding they be involved in the FBI’s investigation into the shooting, Democrats arguing ICE shouldn’t have been in Minneapolis in the first place and Trump administration officials labeling Renee Good, the woman who was killed, as a domestic terrorist.

On Tuesday, some leaders in sanctuary jurisdictions vowed to take the administration to court if the policy were to move forward.

“See you in court @realDonaldTrump,” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson posted on X shortly after Trump’s announcement.

Trump has repeatedly attempted to withhold funding from Democrat-run states, such as his $10 billion cut to child care funds in blue states earlier this month and his October cancellation of nearly $8 billion in funding to states that voted for Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Judges in New York and Washington, D.C., ruled against both those moves, respectively.
